(More customer reviews)I bought this because I needed a helmet cam for all the stupid little things that i do (4-wheeling, diving, racing, etc). This overall package is great and priced even better. The bag that it comes with is very useful and fairly large. I can fit the Contour HD, 3 extra batteries, the waterproof case, extra MicroSD cards, another digital camera, cleaning kit, charging kit, Gorillapod (small flexible Tripod), and an external hard drive in it!! I love the bag!
The water proof case works and it works very well. Look on YouTube to see the difference between this and the GoPro, the Contour looks much better under water! (my opinion at least)
I chose the contourHD over the GoPro because it had much better/more comfortable mounting systems then the GoPro (the GoPro felt very awkward with anything other than the chest mount). The picture looks GREAT and you hardly need to tweak the settings really. The picture quality between the GoPro and Contour really closely matched. Both look very good, and that's why it came down to the mounting system for me.
Cons: The Mic on the ContourHD is JUNK. Plain and simple. You have to turn the gain up extremely high to hear anything, and when you do, there is a lot of background hiss. Wind noise is also a major issue. Whenever I used it, anything over 15-20Mph and it was wind city. I would gladly pay another $100 for a better mic, but I don't want or need GPS, which is why I didn't just buy the Contour+ (it has a much better Mic option). But really, a bad mic isn't that big of deal since most videos I shoot will be overlayed with music anyway.
Windows users may also find it difficult to edit the videos as well. AVS video editor is the best program I have found so far (free, but leaves a watermark on the first minute of video until you buy it). PowerDirector9 is hit and miss, but is a more capable program. Mac users however can rejoice because it records in .Mov files.
The biggest con of them all however is if the battery dies while shooting, nothing gets saved. So if you just made a huge jump on an ATV and forget to stop recording, its all gone! I found out the hard way so you don't have to.
Despite the minor problems it does have, I think it is a very capable helmet cam. If they can address the mic and not saving when battery dies, this would be the perfect camera for me.
