You couldn't find a better camcorder for the money especially anything in HD. The unit is compact and good in your hands. The ergonomics are pretty similar to most cameras on the market except, the HM-340 boasts a laser-touch slider on the side of the screen to control most functions of the unit, including Recording and Zooming. While this is somewhat confusing and one might think that it is touch-screen controlled in fact it isn't. There are actual buttons placed [on the housing] under the screen icons. It took me a few tries to get used to it and I'd rather have it this way than to run moisture and dirt all over the screen. Works well after a while!
The internal built-in 16GB flash memory is adequate to shoot high-quality videos, plus you can also insert an additional SD card to max out its 32GB capacity. In my case, I bought another 16GB Class6 card and took advantage of over 4 hours in high-def/high quality recording time. The videos are sharp and clear in daylight though it does lack a bit in low lit areas, this is pretty common for any camera in its class (including a Canon that I purchased recently). The HM340 does some serious optical zooming at 20X with literally zero loss of quality, it is stable, balanced and retained focus during 'zooming' and does not produce any feedback noise like the Canon where you can hear the recording of a slight sharp wheezing sound (while zooming in and out) when playback. Recorded materials resulted in a somewhat 'cooler' or natural effect and the colors are not overly saturated. The stereo mics are well placed and can detect normal conversations from as far as 30 feet. Music recorded from a live band and playback plugged in to a stereo receiver delivers crisps trebles and rich bass.
You can also take snapshots, but I'd suggest bringing an actual camera if you plan on taking more photos since the specs are under 2MP. Cool features are Time-Lapse recording, One-Touch upload to Youtube and DVD burning on-the-fly.
Pros:
*High Quality Videos
*Stereo Mics rendered sounds accurately (Left to Right - Right to Left)
*Quick start recording
*Compact and light
*'Laser' sensitive touch control (also for Recording, Zooming and other access functions). This virtually eliminates ALL subtle noises and clicks such as pushing the Record button, and Zooming compared to using the rocker on top.
*1080i recording (1080p output), it'd be nice if it can record on 1080P but I've yet to find anything that can do that for less than $500.
Cons:
*Noticeable noise in low lit recordings
*Image stabilization is touch-sensor controlled on the screen -- too sensitive (turned off by accident a few times)
*Separate cap-on Lens Cover instead of attached
*No Mic input
